How to build engagement with a frustrated and worked up dog

A lot of the dogs we work with start off very much like Richie here - they don't have a huge history of training, have very few skills that we can draw down on in difficult situations and they can be impulsive. They're not easy dogs to handle in these initial stages of training because you only get fleeting moments of brilliance amongst a whole bunch of messy stuff and there's no quick fix that suddenly makes them perfect at loose leash walking past distractions - good things take time!
